Workshop: Developments in the Mutual Fund Market: How Should Regulators Respond?

Two major developments have rocked the mutual fund market in recent years. The first is the explosion in the number and variety of index funds and ETFs. The second is the of rise of ESG investing. Both of these represent challenges for securities regulators.

This session will begin with an overview of these developments in the market. We will then discuss how the securities regulatory regime has responded to these developments to date. Finally, we will discuss potential paths forward. 

Adriana Robertson is the Honourable Justice Frank Iacobucci Chair in Capital Markets Regulation and an Associate Professor of Law and Finance (with tenure) at the University of Toronto Faculty of Law and Rotman School of Management. She is also the Head of Research & Policy at the University of Toronto Capital Markets Institute. Professor Robertson’s research focuses on the intersection of law and finance.
